How to calculate a salary increase
- Take your current annual salary (e.g. $52,000)
- Multiply it by your raise percentage divided by 100 (e.g. 5% = 0.05)
- Add that number to your original salary
- Example: $52,000 + ($52,000 x 0.05) = $54,600
To go the other way — if you know the raise amount but want the percentage — divide the raise by your current salary and multiply by 100. A $2,600 raise on a $52,000 salary is exactly 5%.
What counts as a good pay raise?
3-5% is the standard annual merit increase at most large employers. Below 3% means your real purchasing power likely fell — US inflation averaged around 2.5-3% over the past decade. A raise of 7% or more is strong and usually tied to a promotion, a new title, or a change of employer.
