How to use this calculator
Enter your normal hourly wage, choose your overtime rate and enter how many regular and overtime hours you worked this week. Most US hourly jobs pay time and a half for hours over 40 in a week, but your contract or local law may set a different rate or threshold.
How to calculate overtime pay
- Find your overtime rate: hourly wage × overtime multiplier (e.g. $20 × 1.5 = $30)
- Multiply the overtime rate by your overtime hours (e.g. $30 × 8 = $240)
- Add your regular pay (e.g. $20 × 40 = $800)
- Total pay for the week: $800 + $240 = $1,040
Time and a half vs double time
Time and a half means each overtime hour pays 1.5 times your normal rate, so $20 an hour becomes $30. Double time pays 2 times your rate, so $20 becomes $40. Double time is less common and usually applies to holidays, Sundays or very long shifts, depending on the employer and location.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. If you earn $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour.
How much is 10 hours of overtime at $20 an hour?
At time and a half, 10 overtime hours at $20 an hour is 10 × $30 = $300 on top of your regular pay.
When does overtime start?
In the US, non-exempt employees usually earn overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. Other countries, states and contracts set different rules, so check your employment terms.
What is double time?
Double time pays twice your normal hourly rate for each overtime hour. It is often used for holiday work or hours beyond a daily limit.
